The Memorial Service for Dennis (Mac) McGrory was a real tribute to a real Warrior. I suspect we had over one hundred in attendance. I saw people from District 22, other posts, the Elks, his office, from his wife's place of work and lots of us from the Post.
I want to thank the many volunteers who helped me with the planning for this service as well as those who at the last minute asked to help. The list is far from complete but first, our Commander Bill Hicks and his wife Chris with help in coordination and keeping us all informed, Bill Steinauer with the web, Amy Moser for keeping the Aux advised, Merry Culhane who put up the pictures of Mac at the post, our speakers; Kent Mac Neill, Perry Comeau and Red Neck from the SAL's. Also Don, pitched in and helped set up at the cemetery and took pictures of the service. And all of you that attended. Please keep Roxene in your prayers. In closing, our Post will only grow with Volunteerism like this. Please support your Post.

SAL NEWS
SAL Commander's Report -
I wish to thank all my officers for their great showing at our August meeting. My Officers are taking their responsibilities serious and their efforts were obvious while conducting our meeting. We had the honor of having Roxene McGrory present the Squadron Mac's former American Legion District Cover and I shall see that this cover continues it's service. Thank you Roxene! At our meeting all present received a new SAL Squadron shirt that we will be wearing at Post events. Also, very soon, all Officers of the Squadron will soon be in uniform with our new SAL covers. It is the intention of the Squadron Officers to become more visibly present and identifiable as a unit within the Post. Our new membership year has begun and we have started receiving our dues from members. It has come to my attention that in the past the Squadron has carte blanche paid for members dues. I cannot condone this practice as only a small percentage of members attend meetings and work various functions. I do not believe it is fair to have their fund raising efforts drained from this practice. So I urge all members of this Squadron to pay their dues. In an effort to introduce myself to all members I will be personally sending out membership cards. I will hand deliver all those that pay and are local, and send all those that are out of area with a personal correspondence from me. The SAL Squadron will be handling the Post Boys State Banquet in September and I know my 2nd Vice Commander Scott Cesar will make us proud.
Thanks to All who make this team work.
Boys State Chairman
The Post Boys State program has been completed and we are now in the final phase of presenting our awards. The Post Honors Banquet will be held Thursday, September 29th, at 6:30PM. The Post had a great year sending five young men from five of our local high schools. I have received word that at least two of our boys have distinguished themselves this year. You will have to attend the Banquet to find out what they did. It is the intention of the Post to see if the City of Encinitas will allow us to place a display at City Hall outlining these young men's experience. I want to Thank our Post Commander Bill Hicks, for allowing me to serve as the Post Boys State Chairman. It has been a rewarding experience. One I highly recommend to any member who would like to serve.

AUXILIARY NEWS
President's Report -
The Auxiliary has kept busy this summer with Shirley’s Backpacks for Children of Active Military. The military supplied the backpacks and several Auxiliary members volunteered to fill them with back-to-school items for 3rd to 5th graders. It was a lot of fun mulling over the scores of colorful pens, rulers, erasers, paper, folders, etc. There was little room left for their textbooks! Thank you to the Aux members who volunteered their time and money toward this project.
I saw first-hand what Sondra Mote goes through every Monday to get food ready for the snacks we sell on BINGO night. She is organized to the nth degree and I could barely keep up with all of her instructions. Then there’s the volunteers who sell the BINGO cards, collect the money, and sell tear-offs. We need volunteers who can help once a month and become part of the camaraderie of this group. BINGO remains our biggest fund raiser, so please let me know if you could give us a few hours a month and Sondra will train you. No prior experience required!!
Kimberly cooked a great menu in August. Please remember to support our Auxiliary dinners the 2nd Saturday of every month. You can just show up and buy a dinner or volunteer in the kitchen. We take all comers. Just bring an apron and have some fun with us in the kitchen!
Up-Coming Dates: The Executive Board met and we have a full agenda planned for our first meeting on September 6th. Shirley has reserved Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course for our fund raiser on Oct. 23rd. We’re forming a committee to work on donations, food, and fun stuff! Put that date on your calendar and let me know if you can get donations from your favorite restaurants, stores, hair stylist, and golf items! This year’s goal will be to raise money to help returning vets learn about hydroponic gardening. Last year was a rousing success and we donated $2500 to the VA Hospital for their art therapy program.

Our membership is at 50% for paid up dues, so let's keep those checks coming in - I am getting some "address unknowns" back on dues notices I sent out, so if you have moved, please let me know as soon as possible. Our next meeting is September 6th, so please try and come at 7:00pm - we have a lot to do at this meeting and it is important as an Auxiliary member that you come to our meetings and learn what we are about with our programs.
I am still receiving sympathy cards and I want to thank all of you that have sent them to me-you don't know how much it means, so to give back, I am hosting a "Celebration of Life" for Mac at the Post on September 18th (Sunday) after breakfast - around 1:30PM until closing. Please try and come as it will be a special day in honor of Mac and the Post is also celebrating the Air Force Birthday and you all know Mac was in the Air Force.
Don't forget to send
your $25 dues to me to get your new 2012 membership card - Juniors $10.
Thank you. Roxene

2nd Vice President's Report -
September in San Diego is a beautiful time of year, there are a lot of events and activities going on. I just wanted to remind everyone to come and enjoy all of the dinners on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month. The Post, SAL's and Auxiliary put a lot of time and effort into each one, not to mention they are delicious!
Steven and myself will be preparing Meatloaf for the dinner this month, with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Please come and enjoy!
I'd like to personally Thank my mother - Beverly St John and Steven Scholfield for helping me to prepare a very successful dinner last month. A special Thanks to Chris - for peeling the 15 pounds of potatoes, Bob for helping clean up the many dirty pots and pans, and Louise for helping each and every Saturday - don't know what we'd do without her.
We still need volunteers to cook the remaining dinners for the months to follow. I know that everyone in the Auxiliary knows that these dinners must be prepared and that volunteers are needed. I can call and ask for volunteers, however, I feel that this is a rather non-productive way to utilize my time, I feel that if you want to cook a meal for the Legion you would/will do so. So, instead of me calling around, bugging all of you wonderful, busy members, I would appreciate anybody that would like to volunteer to please either e-mail me at kimberstjo@aol.com or call me at 858-210-9557. I have no problem preparing the meals for the following months until the next election - which I will be stepping down - but I don't want to keep all the fun to myself. So, please feel free and give me a call, make a delicious special dinner of your choice and have a good time!

Bingo -
ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS OF POST 416, THE AUXILIARY AND S.A.L..
I need your help in promoting the Post weekly Bingo Program!! It amazes me how everyone gets so enthusiastic in promoting yearly events (fund raisers) and no one seems to care about promoting the weekly Bingo Program which brings in $5000.00 to $6000.00 per year each to the Post and Auxiliary. 17 to 20 players a week just doesn’t make it…….
Unless player attendance picks up considerably, we will be forced to cancel Bingo and thereby elimihnate4 the aforementioned yearly income. Please help promoting the bingo program! Surely you must know someone in your family, neighbors, friends who play Bingo. Maybe even yourselves; TRY IT, YOU MIGHT LIKE IT! We CANNOT continue the program with 17 or 20 players each week.
Bingo is the biggest CONSTANT FUND RAISER the Post has!
Perry Comeau
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Thank you ALL for making my birthday so wonderful, and for all the cards & gifts!! Lots of love and HUGS!!
