October 2011

Commander's Comments -

The post has been pretty busy lately.  I had the honor of doing the POW/MIA ceremony this year with Louise in Billy Wetzell’s absence.  On the same night we retired one of our Post’s flags.

We had a good turnout for the Air Force birthday and “Mac” McGrory’s Celebration of Life.  Thanks to everyone that helped with both events.

On September 27 we are going to have our Boys State Dinner for our participants and their families.  We have invited some VIP’s to attend to honor our boys.

On October 1 the city of Encinitas is having their 25th birthday at the Heritage Museum.  Our post was invited to attend so we will be there from 12 to 4 to represent the American Legion.  There will be a lima bean contest with 4000 people expected to attend.

On October 15 Post 365 of Vista is going to come visit us from 12:30 to 1:30.  If you can, come down and say hello to them.

There is a lot more coming up so keep in touch.  If you’re out on the town, stop by and say hello.  You never know, there may be someone there you haven’t seen in a long time.

1ST Vice Commander's Report -

As membership chairman I would like to report that we started the 2012 membership year like gang busters. But this last 6 weeks we have slowed down, I need about another 100 before the end of the year. So we need to get a move on, don’t forget you can still get your Early Bird Dinner if you get your dues in by Nov 1st 2011.

VA&R Auxiliary Chairman Our Red-White & Blue raffle on Patriots Day went quite well, along with our Spaghetti Dinner. We also had Tate and his group playing music, everyone seemed to have a good time. I want to thank all the members I asked to sell Dinner Tickets for me:  Betsy, Nancy, Melinda, Merry, Connielou, with the help of our Post & Son members Bill H., John C., and Tate S.  I also want to thank all the members that help put this dinner on, cooking, serving and Louise as our Hostess.

Recycling Queen I want to Thank all the people bring the bottles and cans. You that recycle water bottles are doing much better with taking off the lids. The only ones I need to bring up are the Vitamin water bottles they still have the lids on. But as long as you recycle I can live with it. Thanks everyone for your help Shirley Reeves

Chaplain's Report -

I want to thank all of you who helped, participated and attended the following:  The USAF Birthday and Celebration of life for "Mac" McGrory; the Boys State Banquet; the 9-11 Patriot Day event; and the POW/MIA Ceremony. This is what we are all about, being in the eyes of our public, helping our members during times of grief and remembering those we have lost. Keep it up!

This past month was busy; I attended a Service Officer Workshop as well as helped with the Celebration of Life, and worked up a Service at Riverside for a resident of Encinitas whose father passed away. He was a Veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. God Bless him and his family. The service was conducted by the USAF Honor Guard with full honors.

If anyone knows of a member in distress or need please have him or her contact me.

SAL Commander's Report -

AUXILIARY NEWS

President's Report -

Be sure to attend our October meeting because our 5 representatives to Girls State will be talking about what they got out of their week long experience this summer.  Our Auxiliary budgets a sizable amount of money and are always gratified to hear how their experience dramatically changes their outlook on the future.  Betsy Schreiber invites you all to attend this wonderful session.

Our Golf Tournament will be Sunday, October 23rd.  We need players and raffle prizes.  So far we have dinners from high end restaurants, racing tickets, boutique wines & beer, and golf rounds.  Every Auxiliary member should be able to get at least one enticing donation or put together an attractive basket to appeal to buyers of $5 raffle tickets.  Also, we are looking for more corporate sponsors for our tee boxes from $100 on up.  Our goal of $4,000 will sponsor a veteran to be trained at Mira Costa College to do hydroponic gardening, marketing at farmers markets, build green houses, or start a gardening business.  Every graduate is guaranteed employment when they finish the program. 99% of the graduates have remained drug free!

Shirley Reeves reports that the All-You-Eat Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 9th, made $1,006 for the Wounded Warrior Program at Camp Pendleton.  Thank you to Julie Glinski and Roger, Kimberly St. John, Louise Wetzel, Melinda MacNEILL, Merry Culhane, and Cris Hicks for helping make the dinner and raffle a success!

In July, we gave $500 to the non-profit Honor Flight Program that takes WWII veterans to Washington DC to see their war monument and other veteran sites.   David Smith is happy to report that they just returned on Sept. 18th with 26 WWII veterans from the recent “DC Tour of Honor”.  Several individual Auxiliary and Post members also contributed, so we were able to send $1,400 to cover most of the cost of one veteran.  Any WWII veteran can apply for the trip.

Sondra Mote says that Bingo has had some good Mondays recently, but still needs new players and volunteers. Jo Maus has been sending announcements to our local newspapers.  If you have access to newsletters, contact Jo so she can send them our notices.   Please tell your friends or post a flyer on bulletin boards you see.  Bingo still remains our biggest money maker for Auxiliary projects.  We’re lucky to have Perry Comeau as our weekly Bingo caller.  Thank you, Perry.

1st Vice President's Report -

All of you that haven't paid your dues yet, please send them to me.  I sent out renewal notices in July  and then National sent you one also, so you do have a second reminder.  We are at 65% goal right now.  Thank you to those that have paid.  I have been getting many phone calls about the number of years you have been a member on the top corner of your membership card.  National decided to knock off a year on EVERYONE in their database.  When a new member comes in to the Auxiliary, we have always in the past put a "one" in the star on the card, even though you are a new member. and truly do not have a year as a member built up yet.    National has stopped this practice and  that is why you have all lost one year.  This was their decision and I am sorry I cannot change the number of years on your cards.

Last Sunday the 18th, we celebrated the Air Force Birthday along with a "Celebration of Life" for Mac.  I want to thank Bill Hicks for allowing Mac's celebration to be part of the AF birthday with the cake dedicated to Mac.  Thank you, Lowell, for putting together the photo board of "Air Force" Mac.  What a great job you did.  Thank you Julie Glinski for the snack trays you brought in.  A huge thank you to Don Gilbert for donating all the food platters and to my twin, Rhonda, for her help, along with Bill and Don in setting up the back room putting Mac's entire life on show.  Brian and Sandy Lehmkuhler, thank you for the Balboa Hospital photo of us decorating the Xmas tree.  Thank you Terry Sisson for lowering the flag in Mac's honor - and I have a huge thank you to Robert "Chuckles" Hernandez for "saying it all" about Mac and the rest of you that  came and spoke so highly of him.  The day was perfect, I will never forget it and I know Mac was looking down and watching all of us.  We made him proud.  One more thank you to that anonymous person  that put a tequila chip in Mac's flight jacket pocket. Although he wasn't drinking this past year, I know he would have appreciated the gesture.  I used it.  I so hope I didn't forget to thank anyone, but if I did, I know you will let me know.

Roxene McGrory, 1st Vice and Membership

2nd Vice President's Report -

Hope that your September was wonderful.  I still need volunteers for November, December, January, February, March, April, May and so on .... you get the picture.  Please just call me at 858-210-9557 or e-mail at kimberstjo@aol.com.

Amy and Kent Moser will be cooking a very tender pork roast, roasted potatoes, salad and a delicious dessert in October.  Sounds amazing and we all know what a great team Amy and Kent are in the kitchen!!!!

Don't forget about the Halloween party, should be a scary time, better than last year and that says a lot. Bring your favorite dish for the pot luck.

Bingo -

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS OF POST 416, THE AUXILIARY AND S.A.L..

I need your help in promoting the Post weekly Bingo Program!!  It amazes me how everyone gets so enthusiastic in promoting yearly events (fund raisers) and no one seems to care about promoting the weekly Bingo Program which brings in $5000.00 to $6000.00 per year each to the Post and Auxiliary.  17 to 20 players a week just doesn’t make it…….

Unless player attendance picks up considerably, we will be forced to cancel Bingo and thereby elimihnate4 the aforementioned yearly income.  Please help promoting the bingo program!  Surely you must know someone in your family, neighbors, friends who play Bingo.  Maybe even yourselves;  TRY IT, YOU MIGHT LIKE IT!  We CANNOT continue the program with 17 or 20 players each week.

Bingo is the biggest CONSTANT FUND RAISER the Post has!
