Special Notice -

We mourn the death of Caroline Lauther, mother of long time Post Officer and Past Commander Dennis “Mac” McGrory.  The lady passed away Wednesday, June 20.  Services are pending on the East coast.  Our sincere and deepest sympathies are extended to Mac, Roxene and their families.

Commander's Comments -

I have so many people to thank for their help in the last month.  For those that I don’t mention, tell me about it and I’ll catch up next month.

To Greg Phillips, thank you for 8 hours of your time for free, hooking up our new stove with help from Monte Slender.  To Larry Grabowski and Shirley Reeves for the money collected for the stove.  To Kent and Melinda MacNeill for our own copy machine.  To all of you who volunteered for breakfast and Tuesday and Saturday night dinners.  The volunteers are the backbone of this club.

We are planning to have our flag retirement ceremony at approximately 11:00 A.M. July 4, pot luck following.

We are in the process of being a successful post, according to the numbers in the books as of last month.  Thank you all again.

Bob Wilson, Commander

Finance Officer's Report -

I want to thank everyone that came in on Thursday to help with getting the new stove in and the old stove out.  Also I don't know what I would have done with out our new Commander, he stayed after the meeting and cleaned the floor under the stove.  It had not been cleaned since we put the new tile in, so thanks again Bob.

And I must thank the SAL's who took the day off from work to get the stove plumb in.  I don't know everyone one that was there, but I do know Redneck & Monty did a lot of the work. If I forgot anyone Thanks Again

I want to thank Larry Grabowski who got me off my duff to go get the stove.  And for Redneck who wanted to know this information, it took the recycling of 75,573 can and approx 20,000 plastic bottles.  So Thanks Again to all!!!

I have been saving for the stove since Aug. 2005.  I think our members got tired of waiting, after the cans were stolen three time they decided to take up donations to help me along. Can’t name all the donors, but I received $1,550.00. Don’t know how many ways I can thank everyone.

Shirley Reeves, Finance Officer

SAL Adjutant's Report -

Our new SAL officers were sworn in at our Tuesday night membership meeting. Past Commander Chad Hobbs swore in our new Commander, Greg Phillips, and other officers. Commander Chad’s year has been marked by some amazing accomplishments this past year, including our SAL Squadron achieving 106% of our membership quota.

This has truly been a year of SAL members stepping forward and committing themselves to the betterment of our Squadron. Our new Commander, and our Second Vice Dwayne are specially recognized for the work they have put in. Multiple thanks go out to Jim Crowley, our Post liaison, who has been there with thoughtful insight when needed (not to mention pulling the duties of Adjutant this year.)

Our accomplishments are many this year, Sunday breakfasts, fund raisers, participation in local City of Encinitas events, etc., but the one that our SALS can be most proud of is our assistance to our wounded men and woman who have been returned from Iraq and our currently house at Balboa Naval Hospital. At times in conjunction with the Post and Auxiliary, and at times on our own, we have contributed clothing, electric razors, video and music CD’s, poker table, guitars, decorating the Hospital for Christmas, and other items both tangible and otherwise. We have great reason to be proud of our actions this past year.

Our next General Membership meeting will be held Tuesday, July 10th, at 6:00 p.m. As we reported in our last newsletter, we are investigating a change in the meeting time will permit more members to attend. We discussed this at the recent membership meeting and it was decided to give our SAL members more time to give their suggestions at our next meeting. Right now, it remains a choice between our current time or a Saturday morning. Your SAL Squadron needs your input on this. If you cannot make the upcoming Tuesday night meeting, then call your SAL Adjutant, Mac McGrory (858.481.9518) and speak with him or leave a message.

We will continue to discuss our budget and our planned fundraisers at the next meeting Please come with your ideas.

We will be picking up our new membership cards at Department Convention soon. It will soon be time to support your SAL Squadron and renew your membership. Your SAL Squadron values your membership and depends on you to continue to assist our Veterans.

See you at the meeting.

Dennis "Mac" McGrory, Adjutant

AUXILIARY NEWS

President's Report -

I want to thank everyone who attended our last meeting.  Please keep up the enthusiasm and I know we will have a fun and productive year.

The 4th of July Community picnic at Cottonwood Creek Park   will be our first community service event.  I hope all the gals that helped last year will attend and make the decorated bike contest as much fun as it was last year.  I will be calling you with information and there are flyers at the Post.  We need to be there by 8:15 to decorate our part of the park.

The Parrot Party on June 29, and the Mystery Dinner Party are coming up so get ready to have some fun.  Watch for flyers.

If there is something you want to help with, just call any officer or me and I'll get you in touch with the right person.  If you bake, that's good too.  Just volunteer.

No meeting in July except for the Roundtable discussion on Friday July 6.  Come on down!!!!

Happy Birthday America!

2nd Vice President's Report -

July is the Auxiliary month for Dinners and I know we have some good ones coming up.  Merry always has a great dinner, and Julie and Roger are cooking on the 21st.  Julie is doing Chicken Alfredo (it’s to die for) with Caesar Salad.  And of course Donna will be doing her Murder Mystery Dinner Party and you know what a great cook she is.  You must have a ticket for this function, which will include dinner $15.00 donation for Girls State Program. We should have a good month, and need all the members to come out and support our efforts.

We are planning a Roundtable Meeting on July 6th at 6:00pm.  We need everyone's input and new ideas.  If you have an idea for fundraiser we will discuss it, and you can put it into action.

July 4th we will be having a Flag Retirement Ceremony 11:00 am with Pot Luck to follow.  Also Auxiliary is doing the Bicycle Judging at Cottonwood Park.  They also have a pancake breakfast, and I would like to see some Post members helping to set up a table with our membership information.  It would also be nice to see some post members out with their covers and promote our Legion.

Shirley Reeves, 2nd Vice President

RECYCLING

My other project near and dear to my heart is the recycling.  I want everyone to keep on recycling, but they are getting really picky on how they are saved.  So I 'm going to ask for your help.  I only want Soda and Beer cans no small juice cans.  Also only soda and water bottles, the lids must be off, they can be put in the recycling bag for weight purpose. While I have been remiss in putting this information into the Dispatch Bill Steinauer and I have been separating all the different items and it takes forever to recycle them...So please help us out I'm going to tell you I could not have done all the recycling this year without Bill & his big truck, not to mention down in the grimy bags helping to separate all this.  Thanks again Bill....

Shirley

STAND DOWN

One more project I need your help with is clothes for Stand down.  I will need them brought to American Legion on Fri.6th, Sat. 7th or Sun. 8th.  So I can take them to Stand down.  Ladies I will need you once again to stop in after the 2nd of July and pick up a bag of clothes to be laundered, as most of you know, we receive clothes and shoes from one of our High Schools every year that are left in the lockers.  But I do need the clothes laundered, so please help.  All I can say is Thanks Again, what would I do without all of you

MISCELLANEOUS

Golf Tournament:

The Golf Tournament went well and we want to thank all of our auxiliary members that stepped up to help the Post pull off a great tourney.  It was the best we have had in a while.  That is because we had help from everyone.  Kris Gary our new 2nd Vice on the Post side, got some really great gifts, which will make everyone want to play in the next Tournament.  (Oct. 14th) John Barnes & Kris also came up with the three hole sponsors, and that really helps.  If you find anyone interested in sponsoring a hole in the Oct. tournament, please contact Kris and he will take care of it.

Thanks again for all your help

Bob Wilson & Shirley Reeves
