August 2011

Commander's Comments -

Reuben of  “Red Hot Reuben & the Reloaders”, a music group that plays at the Legion, has been  nominated for the Best Blues Album of the Year.

Bob Wilson was installed as the 2nd Vice this month.

Our charter was draped for the passing of loyal, much loved member and Past Commander Mac McGrory.

August 27th, the Oceanside Auxiliary is having a fundraiser that we are hosting. Come on down, try out their cooking and meet some new people.

July 10th was a Big Day for us. We had Legion Riders from Fontana come to the post for a meeting. Along with them came Riders from all over the county.  It was really impressive to hear so many bikes roar up F Street at once. A big thanks to Steve S., Cris H., Tate S., Scott H., and Louise W. for helping me serve 73 breakfasts.

I need to mention Scott Hicks for keeping our garden looking good. He has been out there pulling weeds, smashing snails, watering and feeding the plants for a few months and it really shows.

August 20th the “Hilltop Ramblers” will be playing here.

Bill Hicks, Commander

1ST Vice Commander's Report -

Membership dues are coming in quite well!! But as you know your dues are now due, and as I have said before your dues help us with are Veterans Programs. So the sooner you pay them, the sooner we can help them.

Chaplain's Report -

It is with great sorrow that Dennis (Mac) McGrory has "Crossed over into the Blue". Mac was a great Patriot and was loved by all who had the pleasure to know him. He was Mr. Air Force! Keep his wife, Roxene and family in your prayers.

Blessings on this Post, its newly elected officers and for this Great Country.  As your Chaplain, my focus as a member of the Post 416 newly elected leadership team will be "Service to God and Country". The following Chaplain Report is forwarded:

Continued prayers are requested for the complete recovery of; Don Reeves, Jack Kelly, and Jack Granfield. SAL NEWS

SAL Commander's Report -

I wish to thank my fellow SAL members for their vote of confidence in electing me as their new Commander. I also believe that I have a great group of officers willing to support me in advancing our support of Post 416. We have some great ideas for our squadron and look forward to stepping up our presence around the Post.

I had a great time at convention in Ontario and got to meet our new District Officers, our new Detachment Vice Commander and the new State Detachment Commander. In the near future our State Detachment Vice Commander will be visiting our squadron for the soul purpose of training our officers in the SAL Five Star Program. The SAL's enjoyed hosting the 4th of July BBQ for the Post. Our 2nd Vice Commander Scott Caesar always puts on the best meals. Thanks Scott.

I was sad to hear of Mac McGrory's Passing to Post Everlasting. His inspiration will be missed.

Chuck Camarato, Commander

AUXILIARY NEWS

President's Report -

We welcomed our new officers for 2011-2012 and look forward to a new year of programs.  Our theme for the year will be “Working Smart to Make a Difference.”  Come to our next meeting to approve our Proposed Budget and to find out how we plan to accomplish our theme.

For those who missed the July  meeting, we had a wonderful guest speaker  (Dave Smith) from the  San Diego Chapter of the “Honor Flight Program for Veterans”, which  sends veterans from past wars to see the monuments in Washington DC.    Within 1 week, we successfully raised $1,400 from the Auxiliary, 2 Auxiliary members, and a Post member.    This will pay most of the cost of one WWII veteran’s trip ($2.000), which includes a volunteer escort, air fare, and hotel for 2 nights.   Any WWII veteran can apply for the program.  You can view more about the event on these YouTube links:

July was busy with Stand Down July 15-17th led by Shirley Reeves, who delivered the clothing donations collected by Auxiliary members.     Betsy Schreiber wrapped up our Poppy Program, which funds the many veterans programs during the year.   This year the Program netted over $2,000, so thank you to everyone who mailed in their checks.

Our first Saturday dinner under the new dinner plan was a success by cooks, Merry Culhane & “Little Mary” Yakel.    Since we only do one dinner a month, it’s important that members come to support our Aux dinners on the 2nd Saturday of every month.   Please let Kimberly St. John know if you would like to volunteer as a cook, dish washer, or assistant.

Important Dates:   As usual, the Auxiliary will be “dark” in August, so our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 6th.     Our annual Golf Fund Raiser will be in October, so we need people to start getting auction items now (dinners, hair appts, tickets to plays, Zoo, Sea World, golf items, etc.).

We celebrated Mom Louise’s 90th birthday on July 22nd.  Thank you to everyone who made it a success!

Since the Auxiliary will only have one dinner a month (2nd Saturday of the month), we would like to offer a full service by having an Aux member welcome diners and  sell the tickets!  We need volunteers to sell tickets in the bar area.  The next ones are:   Aug. 13th and Sept. 10th  from 5 pm to 8:00/8:30 pm.    Please contact Amy Moser (858) 342-8939 to volunteer.  This is a great chance to meet and greet people!!

1st Vice President's Report -

By the time you receive this newsletter, you should have received your 2012 Dues Notice for $25.  Please send me your check upon receipt in the envelope provided.  If you have Juniors to pay, please include them for $10.  Our Unit decided to mail out the notices early as NATIONAL wouldn't be sending out the notices for another month, so if you pay from my notice, please ignore the next one you get from National.  Let me know of any change of address.

I have not received the new MEMBERSHIP CARDS yet, but when I do, your card will be mailed to you once I receive your check.  Please remember, if you did not pay this past year, you need to send $40 this time to get your 2012 card.  ($15 for 2011 and $25 for 2012 cards).  Thank you.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have supported me in this tough time and called me or sent me cards from losing "my Mac".  I know he is smiling down on all of us with that twinkle in his eye and I know all of you ladies out there will always remember his "hi darlin'" greeting.  That was Mac and I know he will be remembered with love.

Roxene McGrory, 1st Vice and Membership

2nd Vice President's Report -

I just wanted to thank Mary and Mary for making a wonderful dinner this Month, everyone loved It! So thanks ladies!

Since the Auxiliary is now doing the second Saturdays of each month, I need volunteers to make some infamous, scrumptious, Delicious and amazing dinners. So let me know or you will be getting a call from me to volunteer.

Steven, Colin, Brush and I will be making this months dinner - it will be Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, mashed potatoes and veggies.  Everyone seemed to have enjoyed them last time I made them so hope to see you there.

Let's have a good month and support all the events this month and every month.
