August 2010

Commander's Comments -

This has been a busy month with parties, fundraisers, and celebrations. The Post is still decorated and our garden is Beautiful. Thanks to everyone that's been helping. By the way, we just had a retirement party for one of our members and I think he's been smiling since. Our bartenders worked hard (Cris Hicks & Kristen Rock) and the Post got a "thank you" from at least 50 attendees. Good job to all.

Remember, this post is here to be USED. If you have any type of need, let us know and we'll make something work for you.

There are a lot of things going on in August, so come check them out. It's so nice to have people walk by and say how nice the place looks, or ask how they can help or be a part of us by joining, giving a donation or volunteering. The community is showing interest and approval - so all the hard work by so many of us is getting noticed. Come get involved!

We are open to the public for Saturday dinners and Sunday brunch.  Come on down! If you like bingo try us out on Monday nights which are also open to the public.

Bill Hicks, Commander

1ST Vice Commander's Report -

The new 2010-2011 cards are in and my EARLY BIRD STAMP is full of ink, all we need now is your dues.  So far I have been very busy with the members that have already jumped on board.

As I have stressed before, the dues help with our Veterans programs, and as you have heard we have a lot of them needing our help.

Thanks you again to the members that have already paid.

NOTE:  I went to help at STAND DOWN on the July 16th and they had 947 homeless Veterans, quite a few of them being woman and mothers.  I go every year, but they have never had as many children to feed as this year.  Lots of tiny little children, (just think) on the streets

Shirley Reeves, 1st Vice Commander

2nd Vice Commander's Report -

July was a great month for the Post.  Dinners, bands, and volunteers let us enjoy success.  We have Brad cooking Burgers Tuesdays, Friday lunch by Danny, music Fridays and Saturdays (most).  Keep a close eye on our calendar for all activities. We appreciate your participation.

AUXILIARY NEWS

President's Report -

As the new President, I am excited about our team of officers and volunteers.   Auxiliary volunteers cooked dinners in July and welcomed the Oceanside Auxiliary to host one of them.   They brought their own Country Western bands to create a beat that lasted all evening.    Also, Shirley Reeves collected clothes for the Annual Stand-Down in Balboa Park, which helps Veterans get back on their feet.

We are pleased to announce that Wendy Arms has volunteered to become our Sgt.-at-Arms.  Due to her health, Dolly Mettam has resigned and we wish her well.  The rest of the officers and executive women are intact and are busy planning activities for the year to help Veterans, fellow Auxiliary members, and the Post.

Upcoming Projects & Activities that need volunteers.   If you see something below that gets you excited, please call me (858) 481-6698 or email me (amy@tristaff.com).

· Committee members for Golf Tournament in October, Halloween Gala, November Bake Sale, and Christmas decorations for Post & Veterans Home.

· You could have fun as a BINGO volunteer to sell snacks and pull-tabs on Monday evenings.  We provide training and the snacks to sell.   Also, if you enjoy advertising/ marketing, BINGO could use more public exposure because this has become our biggest fund raising activity!

· If you like cooking, you can become Julia Child and help the Auxiliary with our Saturday night dinners In September & November.   You can create the menu, shopping, cooking, or clean-up.

· We are continuing our Backpack-for-Kids program that provides cool & useful things for children whose parent is being deployed overseas.   If you love shopping, we provide the funds for you to research the best bargains to buy.  The Auxiliary has pledged 2 backpacks a month and we need shopping sleuths!

Amy Moser, President

1st Vice President's Report -

The 2011 membership cards are in, so please start sending me your checks.  I would also like to announce some new members we voted in at our last meeting:  Barbara Gray (long time Auxiliary member and back with our unit from Florida), Elaina Norden, Mary Nelsen, Tina Nelson, and Amy Chelini. Welcome to all of you.  Our next meeting is September 3rd at 7PM - hope all of you can come and learn about our Auxiliary Unit.

Roxene McGrory, 1st Vice and Membership

2nd Vice President's Report -

We had a really fun July starting with the festivities on the 4th.  The place was decorated beautifully with red, white, and blue.   This month the Auxiliary wants to  especially recognize Merry Culhane and Mary Yakel for cooking on July 4th and their Saturday night dinners.    They are tops in my book!

We are planning  Saturday dinners for September and  will have some real surprises to announce.  Everyone should come out and enjoy  the  food and music.

Kimberly St. John, 2nd Vice President

Auxiliary Secretary -

Auxiliary President, Amy Moser, asked me to put up new photos on our WALL OF FAME in the hallway.  If you have any recent photos of VOLUNTEERS and members, please put them in Aux. Presidents Box and I will see that they are properly taken care of.  It’s fun to see our VOLUNTEERS at work and play.  Thanks!

Merry Culhane, Secretary
