April 2009

Commander's Comments -

Well, the Ides of March are now behind us. Spring is near. So are the Post elections. During the April general membership meeting, the second round of nominations will take place. Should you be inclined to seek an office, call the nomination committee and throw your hat in the ring, then show up at the meeting and we will nominate you. You can then accept or decline the nomination.

To all of you who have swept the floor, counted a bottle, cooked a meal, washed a dish, pulled a weed, worked bingo, fixed a light or a leak, picked up a paint brush, helped with the trash, helped with the newsletter or our recycling efforts, made a donation, took a fellow member to an appointment/bank/store, or any other random act of kindness, THANK YOU! OORAH! (It's a Marine thing). Good on ya, try it again.

Below (and in the History Section) you will find a letter of appreciation from Rady Children’s Hospital.

Terry Sisson, Commander

1ST Vice Commander's Report -

This is most likely the last month I will be asking for you to pay your 2008-2009 news.   If you're a member in good standing with quite a few years I hate to see you lose your continuous service years. Also being the largest veterans organization, we need all of you so we can keep that status.  Plus I need you, so it looks like I am doing my volunteer job.  Please, please, please.

Shirley Reeves, 1st Vice Commander

2nd Vice Commander's Report -

A big "THANK YOU!" to Cris Hicks, Dennis McGrory (Mac), and Ed Power for their hard work in sprucing up the outside of the Post with beautiful Spring flowers (Cris & Mac), and painting the porch, ramp and rails (Mac & Ed).  Their work, time and effort are much appreciated!

Also, many thanks to Tate Sanderson, our S.A.L. Commander, and members of his band for making our Friday "Open Microphone Nights" a big success.  Here's hoping that more of our members will join us on Friday evenings.  It really is a lot of fun and great music!

Special thanks to Darrell Hill for donating the contents for the Corned Beef & Cabbage dinner for St Patrick’s day.

Bill Hicks, 2nd Vice Commander

AUXILIARY NEWS

President's Report -

I want to thank Linda, Dana, Mary and Melody for helping with the Poppy Corsages.  We got them done on time and they were beautiful.  The new citizens really appreciated them and even asked for extra to take home to a family member.  More hands make things much easier.  THANK YOU!.

You will be getting a POPPY letter shortly so be sure to return it as soon as possible.  Poppy money can only be used for veterans programs, so we use it toward our VA hospital and VA retirement home programs.  At Christmas we give all the vets in our Pod at the VA home gift certificates.

Shirley Reeves gets a break doing the kitchen laundry.  Thank You Bill Steinauer!

We welcome our new members.  We need to give you your pins and membership information.  Please attend the meetings and become an active part of our Unit.  We need you.

Again, thank all of you cooks and servers, Bingo players and volunteers. Amy always keeps us decorated for the holidays. Be sure to watch for our PARTY WITH THE STARS.  It's a recognition party for all you volunteers.

2nd Vice President's Report -

As you know March was the Auxiliary’s month for the Saturday night dinners. They all went well, so I would like to thank all the cooks and helpers that made that happen. Also I would like to thank Amy who seems to come through with a decoration for all the holidays. The club looked great for St. Patrick's Day. We had no function, but just look nice to come in, have a beverage, play a game of pool or our newest addition, to have a fun game of darts. Also she did great in February for the Mardi Gras party. When you see her around the club, just go up and say thanks. She puts a lot of time and money to keep us enjoying our club throughout the year.

Shirley Reeves, 2nd Vice President

Auxiliary Chaplain’s Chronicles -

Our Julie Glinski’s mother passed away last month. Her Memorial Service was held at the Post. Opel Comeau has missed quite a few meetings, we miss her. Dolly Mettam was back in the hospital for two pints of blood last week. Alice Smith is now in Scripps waiting treatment and bi-opses on lungs and liver. Ro Kirkman also went into the Palomar hospital from a stroke she can't move arms or legs and her speech is impaired.  We have missed quite a few Ladies out sick, we hope they get well soon and return to us. I'd like to give you all a prayer and a blessing.

PRAYER:  May God grant you a sunbeam to warm you…a moonbeam to charm you...a sheltering angel so nothing will harm you....Until you spread your wings, you have no idea how far you can fly.

AN OLD IRISH BLESSING:  May the road rise up and meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your field, and until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Our prayers are with you all. Remember when we are weak in the flesh, we are strong in the Spirit as Paul the Apostle states in his Epistles.

Connielou Caldwell, Chaplain
